Ta-Nehisi Coates is the author and award-winning journalist. He wants to remind us, the condition of black in America. The author shows how policies and culture play an unfair game with them.

The author wrote this book as a letter to his teenage son. In this book, he reveals his fear of life that every black person has in him. One question wonder in mind, the system should protect them but falls woefully short. Author’s one of the quotes in the context if it-

In America, it is traditional to destroy the black body – it is heritage.

In short, in between the world and me summary, the author wants to tell us the three biggest lessons that he learned in his life and want to learn to his son about discrimination, racism, etc. on black people.

Now some important points that’ll help you to understand it more efficiently so, between the world and me is a letter which has written in three parts. The author writes it directly to his son Samori to tell him about the fear of black people and discrimination. Between the world and me summary is an easy and understandable summary.

And about the author, he was growing up in Ghettos of West Baltimore and the first part of the letter starts from here. I have also written some between the world and me quotes to interest.

So let’s start with first lesson of between the world and me summary-

Inborn Dangers

The Coates realized racism early that being black is dangerous. Because Coates saw racism at a very young age. As an example at his young age, a boy called him after school. He came to that boy, suddenly boy brandished a gun, say nothing and put it back.

This was a scary moment for him. This is just because he was black, he was subject to having spontaneous violence directed at him. Author says-

to be black in the Baltimore of my youth was to be naked before the elements of the world.

After it one more experience came in his college in which his acquaintance Prince Jones was gunned down by a cop. The police officer was a known liar. After Jones dead the cop back to his work without any punishment.

Jones had a very bright future and he was also doing well in college and getting ready to being a husband and after few years will become a father.

But this incident took away everything from him. This experience printed in his mind and born a thought that if you work hard to succeed in life then there is no guarantee of your life if you are black.

This experience increased the fear about being black because its a danger of life. It sealed in his mind and become a never forgettable thing. But this was the starting there are many cases he saw in his life.

One more famous quote from this book-

Americans believe in the reality of ‘race’ as a defined, indubitable feature of the natural world. Racism—the need to ascribe bone-deep features to people and then humiliate, reduce, and destroy them—inevitably follows from this inalterable condition. In this way, racism is rendered as the innocent daughter of Mother Nature, and one is left to deplore the Middle Passage or Trail of Tears the way one deplores an earthquake, a tornado, or any other phenomenon that can be cast as beyond the handiwork of men. But race is the child of racism, not the father.

The second point from between the world and me summary is-

An Entirely Different Version of America

an entirely different version of america

According to author whites can never understand the fear and insecurity of blacks. because they have never experienced it in their life. Its level has reached so high that even blacks can’t walk into down street without any fear and insecurity.

Security is a very important thing that every person wants for his family, friends, and himself also. Without security you’ll live like blacks or will die like Prince Jones without any offense.

One more example of police brutality, by killing Michael Brown among many others. This case is also just like Prince Jones case that indicates same condition that happened with prince Jones. This is ongoing issue and its still happens with them.

There is also much difference in the quality of life and clutter also. Many black people don’t have such facilities to live a quality life due to financial and many problems.

But due to discrimination such things are taken away from them.

Black people love their children with a kind of obsession. You are all we have, and you come to us endangered. I think we would like to kill you ourselves before seeing you killed by the streets that America made. That is a philosophy of the disembodied, of a people who control nothing, who can protect nothing…

One more that makes blacks lower that is lack of resources such as- education, employment and many things which can help to live like normal people.

But the situation is different there is a shortage of education, healthcare like programs but along with that employment is low, due to that it promotes poverty and criminal activities.

And in the last one more thing lack of public programs in their community produces many issues. Therefore, there is much difference between blacks and whites in every aspect.
